Each year the Friday before Christmas, the Boys
& Girls Club of Imperial Beach serves Breakfast With
Santa giving each child in attendance a chance to meet
the jolly old elf and to receive a present from him.
Long time Imperial Beach residents and Club supporters Bill Hixon
Sr. and son Bill Hixon Jr. work the kitchen flipping pancakes
and grilling sausages and with the help of a small group of volunteers
set about serving over 200 pancake laden plates to members of
the Club, its licensed school-age childcare program and other
deserving children from the community.
Enjoying their Winter Break from school the children -- ranging
in age from 5 to 17 -- many joined by their parents and younger
siblings, devour the breakfast while seated in the Club's holiday
decorated gymnasium nervously waiting for Santa Claus to make
his appearance.
Santa was celebrating the holiday this year with the help from
Wal-Mart Store #2150, represented by employee Sonia Coucino, contributed
money and toys allowing Santa to give each child attending the
breakfast an age-appropriate gift.
After meeting with Santa, the children made their way to the
Club's gameroom to play pool, ping-pong, fooseball or board games
along with dance activities and arts and crafts.
